Overview
Luangprabang is a district in northern Laos, located 425 km north of Vientiane close to the Mekong River. The population of this district is about 22,000 people. The headquarters of Luang Prabang province is also situated in this district. In the past, Luang Prabang was the capital of a kingdom called Lan Xang ("the kingdom of a million elephants ") from the 14th century to 1946. Before 1975, this was still the royal capital, the center of Laos. At present, it is the capital of Luang Prabang province. Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
